Pylab, Python with NumPy, SciPy and matplotlib aims to provide a viable alternative to Matlab. Here is an attempt to show how to plot sine and cosine interactively as well as through a script. I will leave it to you to decide whether it is easier or tougher than using Matlab, Scilab or GNU Octave

First, the requirements. You must have installed, Python 2 along with the following modules - NumPy, SciPy and matplotlib. I have a preference for IPython instead of the vanilla Python console. You will have to download and install it separately.

An alternative is Pylab, a bundle of IPython along with the above required libraries. A third possibility is to download Enthought Python Distribution (EPD Free). EPD Free is Pylab along with Enthought Tool Suite and other useful Python modules.

Once you have all required software installed, fire up IPython and type these commands interactively:
